Marseille to Paris

Itinerary :

Day 1: Marseille (D)

When you arrive in Marseille, head to your hotel for a welcome dinner with your guide and travel companions. Savor the excitement as you gear up for your 3-night adventure!

Day 2: Marseille – Avignon (B)

Start your morning with a buffet breakfast at your hotel. Then board the coach and venture two hours north to Avignon, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed ancient town with well-preserved medieval ramparts.
Avignon is often called the ‘City of Popes.’ Find out why on a guided city tour including a visit to the Pope’s Palace, the star attraction of Avignon. The imposing fortress, which dominates the city skyline, is considered one of the most prominent medieval Gothic buildings in Europe.

Enjoy free time to wander this lovely city and have lunch on your own before re-boarding the coach for your next destination: Lyon.

Located in France’s Rhône-Alpes region, Lyon is the gastronomic capital of France. The UNESCO World Heritage-listed city is also known for its slew of historical and architectural landmarks, its silk-weaving heritage and its annual Festival of Lights (Fête des Lumières) in December.

The rest of the afternoon is yours to get acquainted with Lyon at your own pace — you’ll take a hop-on hop-off tour with commentary tomorrow. Choose from a number of amazing restaurants to enjoy an unforgettable Lyonnais meal!

Day 3: Lyon – Chalon-sur-Saône (B)

After breakfast at your hotel, it’s time to experience the sights of Lyon in depth on a hop-on hop-off bus tour. With your ticket, you can enjoy the flexibility to create your own sightseeing itinerary as you cruise around the city aboard an open-top, double-decker bus, hopping on and off as you please.

Landmarks you can see include the Basilica of Notre Dame de Fourvière, Place Bellecour and Cathédral Saint Jean Baptiste. On board, learn about the sights, history and culture of Lyon from the informative commentary.

After your hop-on hop-off tour of Lyon, reconvene with your guide and board the coach for a journey along the Beaujolais Wine Route. This picture-perfect stretch of highway winding its way from Villefranche-sur-Saône to St-Amour is flanked by charming stone villages, wineries and stunning vineyards where some of the most well-known wines in the world are crafted.

Soak up the to-die-for views on your way to an atmospheric wine cellar, where you’ll stop to enjoy a tasting of local wines and learn about winemaking in the Beaujolais region.

Then, continue your journey north to Burgundy — another one of France’s famous wine regions — to the pretty little town of Chalon-sur-Saône on the Saône River.

Have free time for dinner in town on your own before your overnight stay.

Day 4: Chalon-sur-Saône – Beaune – Nuits-St-Georges – Vézelay – Paris (B)

Start your morning with breakfast at your hotel before heading north to the nearby city of Beaune, the wine capital of Burgundy.

Your guide will take you to the famous Hospices de Beaune, a charitable almshouse founded in 1443 and now a fascinating museum. Its original hospital building, the Hôtel-Dieu, is a remarkable example of 15th-century French architecture. As you'll learn, every year in November, the Hospices de Beaune holds a massive charity wine auction where people flock from all over the world to buy rare vintage wine.

Next, head to the nearby town of Nuits-St-Georges to enjoy a wine-tasting session and farewell lunch. Sample and learn about local Burgundy wines, and toast to this special occasion with your fellow travelers over a lovely meal of regional dishes.

Hop back on the coach and make your way to Vézelay, where you’ll visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Basilica of St Mary Magdalene, a masterpiece of Romanesque art built in the 11th century.
